We at One Pillar believe it’s our responsibility to ensure we only take what we need from this planet and to sustain any ingredient we use. This is why we have chosen natural hemp as our main ingredient to source and produce our signature grip socks and make a conscious decision with our packaging and recycling solutions.
Hemp fabric is a textile made of fibres of a very high-yielding crop in the cannabis sativa plant family. Historically used for industrial purposes, like rope and sails, hemp is known as one of the most versatile and durable natural fibres.
Hemp has 8x the tensile strength of other natural fibres making it the perfect choice for everyday use. The fabric on it’s own has a tendency to be rough to the touch, so we designed our hemp fabric with a blend of organic cotton and technical fibres for added softeness and sweat resistance. You get the durability of hemp with the soft feel of cotton you’d expect from your bed sheets and linens.
It’s important when buying sustainable fabrics to make sure the dyes and water used are managed properly to minimise the environmental impact. All of our products are made with non chemical dyes and controlled water management.
Benefits of hemp fabric:
- Naturally pest-resistant so can be grown without chemicals
- No water wastage
- 8x the durability of other natural fibres
- All-natural fibre
In addition to these benefits, our hemp fabric is machine washable and gets better over time. The more you use hemp fabric and wash it the more malleable and softer it will become. Our hemp fabric is already blended with organic cotton so it will become even softer. Although due to the PVC grips, we recommend not to place inside the dryer and rather airdry to maintain the grips strength.
Hemp is truly a remarkable natural material. Another advantage of hemp is that its dense growth makes it a prime contributor to weed control and elimination. Hemp grows densely and therefore little sunlight allows for weed growth. Hemp is a high-yield crop, manufacturing in 120 days average, and producing significantly more fibre than flax or cotton in equivalent space. Flax grows once every six or seven years on the same land, while hemp can be grown every two or three years. Also, the entire plant can be used from seed to foliage, for use in such diverse products as building materials, paper and foods.
Hemp is also known as an environmental “savior”. The plant can be used in a variety of ways; it can produce everything from clothing to paper to fuel - easily, cheaply, and most of all, in an environmentally friendly fashion. Hemp can be used as a source of sustainable fuel that can actually wean us off fossil fuel dependence. Hemp is completely renewable as an energy source and it grows fast, too, so it’s easily replenished.
It’s a fantastic source of raw, organic protein. The fibers can be woven into any type of clothing that cotton fibers can be, without using the massive natural resources cotton production does. Hemp fiber is longer, stronger, more absorbent and more insulative than cotton fiber. Oilseed and fiber varieties of hemp are not psychoactive and cannot be grown as a drug- producing crop. Industrial hemp has many uses, including paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics, health food, and fuel.
Hemp grows almost anywhere and requires no pesticides or fertiliser. The plant is good both for the soil and the atmosphere. The potential for Hemp is vast - including sustainable bio-mass (power) and bio-diesel (fuel). Hemp also makes an excellent source of textile and paper. The fibres are long and very strong, making the most beautiful fabric and paper.
